Coral Reefs
As well as looking at creatures from my coast line, I also want to explore more tropical sea life such as coral reefs. Their amazing colour and unique and unusual shapes are fascinating and I feel they would be very interesting to portray through textiles.
Australian artist Helle Jorgensen uses reclaimed wool and discarded plastic to create a crochet sea anemones.
For my project, I intend to use various different materials such as felt, angelina fibres and sheep's wool to create my own artificial coral reef, so when I came across this piece on Pinterest, its unusual shapes and rich textures caught my eye immediately.
I love how she was able to create such delicate and fascinating structure with wool. The various colours used by Jorgensen worked well together to reflect the unique sea anemones found on coral reefs.
This piece of dyed wool caught my attention, as throughout this project, I plan to experiment with sheep's wool. I will dye the wool to match the vibrant colours of coral reefs, and sew in ironed angelina fibres and cocoons made from felt into it to create texture.
